Pulitzer Center
Grants of varying amounts for journalists reporting on critical issues abroad
Who: All nationalities, Must be able to provide a letter of commitment from news outlets
Deadline: Rolling
The Pulitzer Center’s global reporting grants support in-depth, high-impact reporting on critical issues that are often overlooked in the media, from global health to climate change. Their stories address the root causes of crises around the world, including within the United States.
What is a global reporting grant?
The grants cover reporting costs and are based on reasonable, detailed budgets.
Most awards for international travel are between $5,000 and $10,000 but may be more or less depending on circumstances.
Pulitzer expects news organizations to pay journalists for their work, though in exceptional cases, they may consider stipends to cover a reporter's time.
If you are applying on behalf of a newsroom, university, or similar, please note that they do not allow overhead or indirect expenses in their budgets.
What are some of the application requirements?
Pulitzer supports projects across all media platforms and encourages ambitious, prize-worthy proposals that combine print, photography, audio, and/or video for one or more news outlets.
Grants are open to reporters, photographers, radio/audio journalists, television/video journalists, and documentary filmmakers.
The grants do not cover the following items:
- Books (Stories that might become part of a book can be supported, as long as the story is published independently in a media outlet)
- Feature-length films
- Staff salaries
- Equipment purchases
- An outlet’s general expenses (for example rent, utilities, insurance)
Applicants must include in their proposal letters of commitment from news outlets with significant reach to publish or broadcast their work. Pulitzer looks favorably on applications for reporting that will appear in multiple outlets.
