There are two types of Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships which candidates can apply for. 

Before applying to any of the scholarships, select the continent with your country of origin (this is the country according your passport) to receive further information on eligibility, deadlines, and required application documents.

Research scholarship

Research scholarships are awarded for research or study at all Swiss cantonal universities, universities of applied sciences and the two federal institutes of technology, as well as the four research institutes. 

There are three types of research scholarships: Research fellowship, PhD, Postdoc.

Eligibility:

  • Available to post-graduate researchers in any discipline
  • Must hold a master’s degree as a minimum
  • Planning to come to Switzerland to pursue research or further studies at doctoral or post-doctoral level 
  • Must be nominated by an academic mentor at one of the eligible higher education institutions
  • Check the individual pages of each of the research scholarship offerings for full eligibility

Important scholarship information:

  • Scholarship starts in the 2023-24 academic year on September 1, 2023
  • The scholarship has a duration of 12 months
  • Only the PhD award is prolongable up to 36 months; The scholarship is awarded in three steps of 12 months each based on the achieved academic results
  • The research fellowship & PhD scholarship amounts to a monthly payment of CHF 1’920
  • The Postdoc scholarship amounts to a monthly payment of CHF 3’500
  • Each scholarship amount covers the living costs of one person only
 

Art scholarship 

Art scholarships are awarded for study at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts.

The purpose of the application is to enable selected applicants to undertake initial Master’s studies in Switzerland at any Swiss conservatory or university of the arts.

Eligibility:

  • Open to art students wishing to pursue an initial Master’s degree in Switzerland
  • Available to students from a limited number of countries only
  • Must be born after December 31, 1987
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent achieved before July 31, 2023 
  • Valid for full-time studies in Switzerland only

Important scholarship information:

  • Scholarship starts in the 2023-24 academic year on September 1, 2023
  • The scholarship has a duration of 12 months
  • The award is prolongable up to 21 months at most depending on the Master program chosen and the necessary ECTS credits
  • The scholarship amounts to a monthly payment of CHF 1’920
  • The scholarship amount covers the living costs of one person only
