The JET Program is a competitive employment opportunity that allows young professionals to live and work in cities, towns, and villages throughout Japan.
Most participants serve as Assistant Language Teachers (ALTs) and work in public and private schools throughout Japan. Some work as Coordinators for International Relations (CIRs) as interpreters/translators.
The JET Program seeks participants who are adaptable, outgoing, and have a deep interest in Japan. Only the best candidates are chosen to represent America.
The program typically selects 1,000-1,100 Americans for participation in the JET Program.
The JET contract lasts for roughly 12 months. During this time, participants are expected to be at work approximately thirty-five hours a week, excluding lunch breaks.
Generally, Saturdays, Sundays, and Japanese national holidays are days off. However, there are cases in which extra hours are required before/after usual office and/or school hours.
What are the benefits of the JET program?
In exchange for their work, JET participants receive a salary of approximately ¥3,360,000 for their first year, with slight increases in salary if they continue in the program beyond one year. This salary is before any taxes and other deductions.
In addition to salary, JET participants receive insurance of various forms, a visa, and covered travel expenses between home and Japan.
When applying, JET applicants may indicate up to three placement preferences, however, final placements depend on position availability in each prefecture.
Please note: The JET Program assists participants in making arrangements for housing. However, all housing costs are the responsibility of the applicant from the use of their own salary.
